World Day of Social Justice 2024 : Theme

The United Nations has chosen the theme “Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances” for the World Day of Social Justice 2024. This theme encourages nations, organizations, and individuals to come together, fostering unity in the pursuit of addressing social injustices.

World Day of Social Justice 2024 : Date and Historical Background

The World Day of Social Justice has been observed annually on February 20 since its inception. On June 10, 2008, the International Labour Organization (ILO) endorsed the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization, marking the third major declaration since the adoption of the ILO Constitution in 1919. The General Conference officially designated February 20 as the World Day for Social Justice during its sixty-third session on November 26, 2007.

The 2008 Declaration builds upon the principles outlined in the 1998 Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and the 1944 Philadelphia Declaration. It articulates the understanding of the ILO’s mandate in the context of globalization and reaffirms the commitment to social justice.

World Day of Social Justice 2024  : Significance

The World Day of Social Justice serves as a platform to advocate for the improvement of social justice at both national and international levels. Advocates argue that promoting decent work, a fair globalization agenda, fundamental rights, employment opportunities, social protections, and constructive social dialogue is paramount in placing social justice at the core of policies.

Despite these efforts, persistent grave injustices, widespread labor insecurity, high inequality, and unraveling social contracts continue to challenge the pursuit of social justice, especially during global crises. The United Nations emphasizes that social development and social justice are indispensable for achieving and maintaining peace and security within and among nations.

As the world marks the World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2024, the call to “Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances” echoes, urging global collaboration and concerted efforts to create a more just and equitable world. It is a day to reflect on progress, identify areas for improvement, and renew the commitment to social justice for all.
