Visionary Founder of Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. S.S. Badrinath, Passes Away at 83

Chennai: Dr. S.S. Badrinath, a trailblazing figure in the field of ophthalmology and the founder of Sankara Nethralaya, breathed his last on November 21 at the age of 83. His demise marked the end of an era for India’s healthcare community, as the nation bid farewell to a pioneer known for his contributions to charitable healthcare and eye care accessibility.

Dr. Badrinath, born on February 24, 1940, faced adversity early in life, losing his parents during his teenage years. Turning grief into ambition, he utilized his parents’ insurance money to embark on a journey in medical sciences. Graduating from the Madras Medical College in 1962, he pursued ophthalmology in the United States, where he laid the foundation for his illustrious career.

In 1978, Dr. Badrinath returned to India with a vision to establish Sankara Nethralaya, a not-for-profit eye hospital, aiming to provide free eye care to the economically disadvantaged. This initiative revolutionized healthcare in India, setting a benchmark for accessible and quality medical treatment.

Rama Suganthan, Vice President of the Tamil Nadu Congress, confirmed the passing of Dr. Badrinath, stating, “Our visionary Founder, a legend, and compassionate leader Dr. S.S. Badrinath passed away early this morning. The last rites will be held after 9.30 A.M. today at the Besant Nagar crematorium. SN is deeply saddened by the demise of our Founder.”

Sankara Nethralaya, founded as a unit of the Medical Research Foundation, became an iconic institution hosting medical education, cutting-edge research, and patient care. Dr. Badrinath’s impact extended beyond the hospital’s walls, earning him prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, for his humanitarian efforts and significant contribution to society.

Even after his passing, Dr. Badrinath’s commitment to service echoes through his instructions. He explicitly stated that there should be no elaborate arrangements upon his death and urged the staff at Sankara Nethralaya to continue their work without interruption. 

Dr. S.S. Badrinath leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations in the realm of healthcare.
