PARIS— President Emmanuel Macron has chosen Gabriel Attal as France’s youngest-ever prime minister, ushering in a new era for the country amid mounting political pressure from the far right. At 34, Attal, who previously served as government spokesman and education minister, is not only the youngest but also the first openly gay individual to hold the position.
Attal’s ascent follows the resignation of his predecessor, Elisabeth Borne, on Monday, amid controversies surrounding an immigration law that bolstered the government’s authority to expel foreigners. Macron, seeking a fresh start, expressed confidence in Attal’s abilities and urged him to revive the “spirit of 2017,” referencing the president’s initial success in shaking up French politics.
“I know I can count on your energy and your commitment,” Macron affirmed in a message to Attal. Gabriel Attal played a pivotal role as government spokesman from 2020 to 2022 before assuming the prestigious position of education minister.
Critics have targeted Attal for his limited experience, Parisian background, and perceived loyalty to Macron.
In a recent interview Attal opened up about his personal experience with bullying during middle school, including homophobic harassment. His commitment to addressing societal challenges aligns with Macron’s broader strategy, particularly as the president faces increased pressure from far-right figures like Marine Le Pen.
Attal’s appointment comes at a critical juncture in Macron’s second term, set to last until 2027. With European Union elections on the horizon, Macron’s government aims to counter the rise of far-right, anti-EU populists. A key member of Macron’s centrist camp since 2016, the new prime minister will be responsible for domestic policy, including economic policy, while managing a parliament in which Macron’s center-left party lost its parliamentary majority last year.
