French President Emmanuel Macron has been extended an invitation to serve as the chief guest for India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2024. The invitation comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France earlier this year, where he was honored as the Guest of Honour at the Bastille Day Parade in Paris.
During the G20 Summit in New Delhi in 2023, Prime Minister Modi had initially invited US President Joe Biden to be the chief guest at the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. However, Biden’s visit did not materialize, leading India to extend the invitation to French President Macron, highlighting the close ties between the two nations.
This marks the first time since 2016 that India has invited a French president as the chief guest for the Republic Day parade. The strategic partnership between India and France extends to various areas, including defense, space, and nuclear cooperation.
Notably, PM Narendra Modi’s presence at France’s national day celebrations and parade in July further underscores the robust relationship between the two countries. France has recently submitted bids for India’s procurement of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets for the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, reflecting the depth of their collaboration.
The invitation to President Macron underscores India’s intention to strengthen its global relations, particularly with countries that share common interests. France’s consistent support for India at international forums, including the United Nations, has further solidified the foundation of this alliance.
Selection Process for Chief Guest:
Choosing the chief guest for India’s Republic Day celebrations is a meticulous process that begins approximately six months before the event. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) carefully considers various factors, including the diplomatic relationship, political, commercial, military, and economic interests with the invited nation.
Historically, the chief guest’s association with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has also played a role in the selection process. After obtaining the approval of the Prime Minister and the President, the MEA discreetly checks the potential chief guest’s availability and prepares a curated list of candidates.
Planning and Significance:
Once the candidate is finalized, India and the guest country engage in official talks. Territorial divisions in the MEA work on agreements, and the Chief of Protocol plans the program and logistics. The comprehensive plan is shared with the visiting nation’s Protocol Chief, involving the governments of both countries.
The visit holds great significance, with the chief guest receiving ceremonial honors, attending official receptions, paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, and participating in a banquet hosted by the Prime Minister. Former Indian Foreign Service officer Manbir Singh emphasizes that the chief guest’s presence reflects the friendship between nations and their shared pride and happiness.
