BJP has officially declared Bhajanlal Sharma as the next Chief Minister of Rajasthan. The decision was announced on Tuesday following a crucial legislature party meeting.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, serving as the BJP central observer, presided over the meeting along with co-observers Saroj Pandey, national vice president, and Vinod Tawde, national general secretary. The announcement was made during a press conference by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who revealed that the proposal for Bhajanlal Sharma’s candidacy came from former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. The decision was met with unanimous agreement among the party members.
Among the notable contenders for the top post were former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Union ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Bhajanlal Sharma, a 56-year-old first-time MLA hailing from Bharatpur, secured victory in the Sanganer seat during the recently held Rajasthan polls. Despite being labeled as an outsider, he defeated Pushpendra Bhardwaj, the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate, with an impressive margin of 48,081 votes.
Sharma’s political journey includes a two-decade-long tenure as the state general secretary under the leadership of four state BJP Presidents—Ashok Parnami, Madan Lal Saini, Satish Poonia, and C.P. Joshi. Known for his close association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP leadership, Sharma’s appointment is being perceived as a strategic move by the BJP to strengthen its ties with the Brahmin community in Rajasthan, constituting around seven percent of the state’s population.
